What to Ask Before You Book a Mover
A few plain questions, asked before you pay a deposit, tell you more about a mover than the number on the quote.

Choosing a mover is mostly about asking the right questions, and most of them take a couple of minutes. The answers tell you more than the price does. Two quotes for the same job can look very different on paper and then land close together once the extras are added, or the other way round. Here's what to ask any mover in Fremont or anywhere in the Bay Area before you book.
How is the estimate built?
Ask whether the estimate comes from a walkthrough, a video call, a phone conversation or a guess from a list of rooms. A phone quote based on a bedroom count is the least reliable, since two three-bedroom homes can hold very different amounts. A walkthrough or a video tour lets the mover see the furniture, the access, the garage and the attic. Ask what the estimate includes and what it assumes, such as the number of boxes, whether packing is included and how many floors are involved. Then ask what happens if the real load turns out larger.
It also helps to prepare your own list. Walk the house and note anything unusual: a piano, a heavy workbench, a big sectional that won't turn a corner, a storage shed. A mover can only price what they know about, and every surprise on moving day is one you could have mentioned in the first call.
Flat rate or hourly, in plain terms
A flat rate means the mover agrees on one price for a defined job. You know the total before the truck shows up, as long as the job stays the same. Hourly means you pay for time, so a fast crew and a short job cost less and a slow day or a delay costs more. Neither is automatically better. Hourly can suit a small local move with easy access. A flat rate suits people who want the number in advance. Whichever you choose, ask what could change it, and ask for the terms in writing.
What counts as an extra?
Extras are where surprises live. Ask directly about stairs, long carries from the truck to the door, elevator waits, heavy items such as safes and pianos, packing materials, taking apart and rebuilding beds or tables, and a second stop. Also ask about parking at either address and what happens if the crew has to wait. A mover who explains the extras up front is helping you compare quotes fairly. A mover who says 'don't worry about it' without details is worth another question.
How do they handle fragile and heavy items?
Ask how dishes, mirrors, TVs and artwork are protected, and whether the crew brings blankets, stretch film and boxes or expects you to. Ask who packs the fragile things and who is responsible if something breaks. Ask whether they move pianos and antiques and how many people go on those jobs. Ask what happens if there is damage: how you report it, how long you have, and what the process looks like. Get the answer in writing, not just on a phone call.
Ask how they'd handle a wardrobe, a flat-screen TV and a glass table, and listen to how the answer sounds. A clear, unhurried answer is a good sign. Vague answers are worth noticing.
Delivery windows and longer moves
For a local move, ask for an arrival window and what happens if the crew runs late. For a longer move within California, ask when the pickup happens, when the delivery happens, and whether your belongings travel alone or share the truck. A clear delivery window matters, because you'll need to be at the new place, arrange elevator time and have somewhere to sleep. Ask who you call if something changes on the day, and whether that's a person or a voicemail.
Trust your read of the call, too. Does the person answer plainly, return calls and explain things in simple words? How a company treats you while you're still deciding is usually how it treats you once you're booked. Before you pay a deposit, ask for the estimate, the services included, the date, the time window and a contact number in writing. Read it once, slowly. If something you discussed isn't on the page, ask for it to be added.
